The first real breakthrough in the treatment of ED or erectile dysfunction was in 1983 when it was thought that ED was mental. The valves respond to chemical messages that the brain can control, a mechanism that brain uses it to increase blood flow in several different parts of the body. Finally, another enzyme called phosphodiesterase (PDE) deactivates the cGMP; ¬Viagra eliminates the PDE that is decomposing the cGMP, so cGMP builds up in the penis and has a greater effect on the arterial walls. The greater the amount of cGMP the greater the blood flow, and the greater the blood flow, the stronger the erection.
