A few weeks ago we talked about nutrients that could help increase sex drive and increase the likelihood of a longer lasting erection. I’d like to add to that discussion by adding a few popular herbs that are known to have the same effects.

Ashwagandha (or, Indian Winter Cherry) – The roots of this Indian shrub are used in Ayurvedic medicine and offers numerous health benefits, including anti-stress, rejuvenation, anti-inflammation. It’s also traditionally used as to enhance sexual performance.

Gingko – There’s a lot of research right now being poured into the herb gingko bilboa and all its miraculous healing properties. Gingko improves blood flow throughout the body and can increase the amount of blood that gets sent to the penis, especially at the time of an erection. Be careful not to take too much Gingko, though, especially if you also take aspirin – gingko is a blood thinner and could cause bleeding if taken in excess.

Ginseng – Ginseng is a popular herb used in Chinese medicine and in tea. Studies have shown that it helps men with erectile dysfunction perform sexually.

Maca – This is a root-like vegetable from the Andes Mountains and is used to increase energy, vitality, fertility, and sexual virility.

Yohimbe – This is not actually an herb, but is actually an extract that comes from the bark of the African yohimbe tree. If your ED has possible psychological causes, then yohimbe might be a good option for you. Yohimbe is also one of the active ingredients in Sildenafil-Lovex, a swallow able tablet.

Epimediurn – Also known as horny goat weed, this herb has been used for centuries in Chinese medicine and will raise low testosterone and thyroid levels.

All of these herbs can be purchased and used on their own and many can be found in herbal supplements that are marketed to increase your sex drive, sexual performance, and sexual pleasure. Viagra Herbal Viagra is an example of such a supplement that is all-natural, made from some of the herbs listed above and proven to help treat ED.

I consider myself to be an eco and health conscious person but I must admit, I never gave a thought as to the contents of my lubricant. And boy did I miss something important. There are so many lubricants out there for your sexual pleasure that do not give a moment of thought to the damage some ingredients can do to your skin! It seems so obvious that the mucous membranes are the moist layer of semi-permeable tissue lining the mouth, nose, eyes, vagina and anus and as they do not have the protective layer found on the surface of the outer skin, these membranes can be damaged, irritated and penetrated by any synthetic chemicals much more easily. So old style lubricants are usually made of synthetic chemicals, some with known or suspected safety issues, such as skin irritants, penetration enhancers or estrogen mimicking properties. Sometimes there is no ingredient list at all! So what to look for when shopping for a lube? Think natural. Certified and guaranteed purity and quality plus organically produced ingredients ensures product integrity and no hidden chemicals carried over from the production processes, such as the recent FDA alert for Diethylene glycol (anti-freeze) in glycerin. Make sure there are no irritants like menthol or peppermint oil or grapefruit seed extract.

Furthermore, make sure its never been tested on animals and has no animal ingredients. Why should fluffy have to die for your lubricant? Not necessary at all. Only plant based ingredients should be used unless there is no effective or safe natural option.

Look for names like organic Aloe Vera, organic Flax extract and Guar, Locust Bean and Xanthan gums which all of which contribute to a deep velvety texture. Cocoa butter and Shea butter are skin food, which impart smoothness and body. Some Vitamin E helps the skin and acts as a preservative as well. Enjoy!
